Practical field choices

From wired probes to cellular sensors.

Our first recommendation

Pycno Terra brings the system together.

The Master measures soil and ambient conditions, powers itself with a solar panel and battery, and sends data over cellular networks. Nearby LoRa Nodes share that connection. GPS is available on some models. Models after 2024 also support BLE, OTA updates and Wi-Fi data upload.

For farms starting a monitoring network, combining the probe and cellular gateway in one device makes Terra our first recommendation. Compare the full installation cost alongside standalone probes that need separate telemetry.

Make sense of your measurements

From sensor readings to field decisions.

Learn how to choose a sensor, schedule irrigation and interpret the soil conditions behind your readings.

Before you choose

Three things to get right.

01 / SENSING DEPTH

Follow the active roots.

Match the measurement levels to root depth. Profile probes help show how irrigation moves through the soil; point sensors suit targeted locations and substrates.

02 / FIELD CONNECTION

Trace the whole data route.

A wired probe needs a logger. LoRaWAN needs network coverage. A cellular sensor needs a suitable mobile signal. Include every component in your plan.

03 / POWER & SERVICE

Plan for the whole season.

Compare solar charging, long-life batteries and external supplies. Include access for charging, maintenance and field machinery.

Match the sensor to your field.

Compare measurements, power and connectivity before choosing a system.

Common questions

Choosing a soil monitoring system.

Do all soil sensors connect directly to the internet?

Connection methods vary. Pycno Terra Masters have cellular connectivity. Wired probes such as TEROS 12 need an external logger, and Sensoterra uses a LoRaWAN gateway or network.

Does every sensor measure electrical conductivity?

Check the specific model. TEROS 12 and Pycno Mini list EC. EnviroPro and Sentek offer model-dependent salinity outputs. TEROS 10 and TEROS 11 do not output EC.

How should I compare prices?

Compare the installed system: sensors, gateway or logger, power supply, cabling, installation and ongoing data services. Listed manufacturer prices keep their original currency.
